Dr. Patel is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Medicine, Neuromuscular Medicine and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, and today there are approximately seven million stroke survivors in this country. According to a survey of stroke survivors, as well as their caregivers, approximately 60 percent of stroke survivors live with a post-stroke condition known as spasticity, which causes muscles to contract and spasm,  leading to stiffness and pain. Many affected with spasticity have upper limb spasticity, which affects the elbow, wrist and fingers, and can present as a bent wrist with fingers pointing downward, a fist that  stays clenched or a flexed elbow that stays twisted against the chest. This can significantly impact the daily routines of both stroke survivors and their caregivers. People living with upper limb spasticity often are not able to do the simplest of tasks like getting dressed, hand washing, or even eating. According to the survey conducted by Allergan, Inc. and National Stroke Association, 70 percent of stroke survivors living with spasticity and their caregivers rank the debilitating condition  as one of the top three symptoms impacting their life post-stroke. It ranks second only to paralysis in its impact, yet close to 50 percent of stroke  survivors and their caregivers are unaware of the available treatment options. Dr. Atul Patel will tell our listeners more about the results of the survey. He’ll discuss the impact spasticity has on sufferers and caregivers, the resources available to patients who may be suffering from the condition and what questions they should ask their doctor.

2013_Carolyn_Head_Shot_300dpi_CROPPEDOur Guest today for our Christmas Show is Carolyn Wente

a 4th generation winegrower, and CEO of Wente Vineyards, and grand-daughter of the Wente generation that survived Prohibition. Carolyn discusses the Wineries History and why the Wente Winery is so important to the History of Wine Making. December marks the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. Considering the United States is the fourth largest wine producing country in the world it seems hard to swallow that for over a decade the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages was prohibited. Local know-how, in some cases dating back 400 years, disappeared virtually overnight. However, a few vineyards actually continued producing wine legally during this time, and even thrived. Now the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History Museum  curators are hunting down Prohibition winemaking artifacts and lore from these vineyards before it too, disappears, to add to the permanent exhibit Food: Transforming the American Table, 1950-2000 . One of vineyards & wineries that actually made wine legally during Prohibition, was Wente Vineyards. At 130 years old, they’re the oldest continuously operated family winery in the country. Devin Co-Founder of the poverty eradicating project, BeadforLife, Devin Hibbard works tirelessly to help extremely poor Ugandan women change their own lives.  Devin is passionate about creating partnerships between people living on a dollar a day, and world citizens to create a social movement to overcome extreme poverty in our lifetimes.Devin has extensive experience in international development and poverty issues having lived and worked in India, Kenya, and Uganda, where she worked with organizations helping empower women.   In addition to co-founding BeadforLife, she also spearheaded an initiative to reach out to more rural women in Northern Uganda who suffered under 20 years of civil war.   The BeadforLife Shea Project works with 760 women in war torn Northern Uganda who are paid a fair trade wage to collect shea nuts which BeadforLife turns into organic soap and lip balm.Devin also believes passionately in engaging Americans on global issues and poverty, and helping us all understand that although poverty is a big and complex issue, there are proven and effective ways to fight poverty and things everyone of us can do to make a difference.Devin holds a Masters in Public Policy from the Evans School of Public Administration at the University of Washington specializing in international development and non-profit management.  She is the author of a guide to international issues, Global Issues & Sustainable Solutions.  Devin is an American Marshall Memorial Fellow, promoting strong ties between Europe and the US, and a graduate of Leadership Tomorrow.Segment-1

untitledCharlotte Rinderknecht, President and Executive Producer. of Studio Kinate.  Charlotte created and founded an animation studio in Northern Virginia. She had a dream to build a studio not in NY or LA but in Virginia . First, it was the young artists that drove her to push the envelope, to think outside the box.  They were talented, passionate, and immersed in new technology.  They were eager and hungry for a chance. For many of them, getting out to the West Coast or even New York to pursue a career in animation was close to impossibility. And then she began to discover veterans living in Virginia, Maryland and DC who had left the industry hubs to raise or be closer to family.

Then she  found  Walt Disney’s famous phrase—“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible”—that gave me a the final inspiration. She found that while this would be a hard journey, her desire was to work with novice animators and seasoned veterans in an environment where such talent is not only appreciated, but is considered the backbone of the company. She wanted to push the envelope when it came to animated storytelling.  After all, animation isn’t JUST about cartoons; it is about creating worlds, giving life to characters that may only exist in the imagination–telling stories!

Dr. Amerling will discuss the subject “Unaccountable Care Organizations” The release of preliminary performance data of 32 Accountable Care Organization. Like HMOs, ACOs will face very strong incentives to cherry pick the healthy and to limit access to specialty care, procedures, expensive drugs, and hospitals. These incentives are devastating to the truly ill. And the ACO is accountable to CMS, not to the patient! Dr. Amerling studied medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, graduating cum laude in 1981. He completed a medical residency at the New York Hospital Queens and a nephrology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. EliotBrinton-3   Our next guest is Dr. Eliot A. Brinton. “There is no evidence” that lowering triglycerides cuts coronary events, agreed Dr. Eliot A. Brinton, director of atherometabolic research at the Utah Foundation for Biomedical Research in Salt Lake City. “Results from five fibrate treatment trials were all suggestive that lowering triglycerides led to reduced events. And the JELIS results showed clinical benefit with fish oil and greater benefit in people who entered with high triglycerides and low levels of HDL cholesterol. The EPA [that was] used in JELIS was essentially the same drug as AMR101,” a highly purified form of EPA, Dr. Brinton said in an interview. “But we won’t know what AMR101 will do for events until we do a study,” added Dr. Brinton, who is on the steering committee for the AMR101 clinical trial scheduled to soon begin. “I think we have a very good chance of showing benefit. It’s very exciting. If any drug can show a statistically significant benefit on top of a statin, it will be a huge step forward,” Dr. Brinton commented.

Michele Strom  Our last guest is Michele Strom. Listen up, drama queens…A new TV reality show, Obsessed With the Dress, airs this summer and takes place right here in Omaha. Viewers can anticipate seeing the inner workings of the boutique and learn the background stories and successes of clients, as the show follows each girl through to the end of her pageant. But don’t fear—the show will undoubtedly serve up a heavy dose of drama, much like its bridal show predecessor.

Strom says she has no formal background in design. “I just have a unique eye for being creative and an ability to visualize what will look good [on a client]. I missed my calling at an early age, but it’s snowballed into this amazing opportunity to find something later in life that I am really passionate about.”

JESSICA DenayOur last guest is Jessica Denay, “Hot Moms Club” Founder, Author, and “Mommywood” columnist for Pregnancy Magazine. New parents can spend thousands on everything from bassinets to baby wipe warmers and designer onesies. But, even if you don’t have a king-sized bank account, your newborn can still “rule” among the diaper set.
While extravagant baby gifts are great, the average parent doesn’t need them. The essentials you’ll need are a wardrobe for all seasons, a stroller and a comfortable nursery that inspires sleep, play and safety. Also, don’t forget to include dad! Right in the beginning! Since guys love anything and everything electronic, put them in charge of scoping out the latest baby gadgets. For example, you’ll definitely need a baby monitor. The Motorola BLINK1 Wi-Fi® Baby Camera turns any compatible Smartphone, tablet or computer into a video baby monitoring system, allowing you to “check-in” wherever you are, whether it’s at work, dinner or across the country. With two-way communication, this is the ideal baby monitoring system for today’s tech- savvy parents.

Selecting the perfect car seat is the most important thing for any parent; you can’t leave the hospital without it. The Diono Radian RXT is the only convertible plus booster seat equipped with a full steel frame, making it one of the safest car seats available today.

It was only after her son and VP Kirby Johnston made the introduction to another pioneer and entrepreneur – Texan powerhouse businesswoman Sara Ostrofsky – that Johnston had the finances to move forward. “Sara is my angel investor, my partner and my great friend and without her we would never be where we are today” says Johnston.

Lynn Edgington of Eagle Research our expert Internet Investment Ponzi Scams and Fraud. Will discuss the many Updates on the Profitable Sunrise case . The state of Ohio filed civil charges against Nanci Jo Fraser (Bryan, OH) for her role in Profitable Sunrise. They filed 23 counts against her, her husband, Albert Rosebeck and her Focus Up Ministries International. She did a phone interview where she tried to claim she didn’t know what was going on, Roman Novak used her name and information without her knowledge, yada, yada, yada. The same things all of them say when they get caught. She has been promoting Ponzi’s since at least 2008, maybe longer. We could only trace her back that far. We are expecting the feds to file civil charges within the next 3-6 weeks too. So her legal troubles are far from over. Then if they want, both Ohio and the feds can file criminal charges.

may-30-2 Jim Lefebvre grew up when baseball was THE game in America. Long before numerous other sports took center stage, or even shared the same platform as baseball. From little leagues to sand-lots to neighborhood backyards and school play fields, baseball was on the minds of most kids from sun-up to sun-down. And many of them shared the same dream: To become a major league ball player. Jim Lefebvre realized his dream as he was scouted and picked up by his home-town team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was Rookie of the year in 1965 and helped propel his team to the World Series Championship. In 1966 he was one of the All Star players. His name became synonymous with baseball. Not only did Jim (nicknamed Frenchy because of his ethnic last name) appear on the field, but also on TV screens throughout America with guest appearances on Batman, Gilligan’s Island, Knight Rider and M*A*S*H. It was the wonderful days of family TV when everyone could enjoy an evening in front of the tube. Jim continued his career with the Dodgers for seven seasons and was then picked up by the Lotte Orions in Japan. He was the most-played baseball player in Japanese history, and the first player to be on a championship team in both the MLB and in Japan.

Jim loved the game of baseball and when his on-field play time ended in 1976, he moved up the ladder and began a series of coaching jobs. He began coaching the Seattle Mariners in 1989 and led the team to its first winning season but was released in 1991. Jim went on to manage both the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers. It was after that when he was presented with what he calls “his greatest challenge of all”: Building the Chinese Baseball Team for the 2008 Olympics.

may-25 Dimitry Pototskiy, author of “Journal of a Russian Businessman” the book is a multifaceted picture of modern Europe; it’s a true financial thriller and a tragicomedy of how life throws together human fates and ambitions to keep this world revolving.

Mr. Pototskiy, a Moscow ranking official, abandons his career in government and returns to the business world. His challenge is find access to unadvertised high-yield Trade Programs that function behind the scenes of financial markets. Gradually, he becomes a witness to various machinations on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, the company he works for in Moscow plunges into reckless swindling.

All these developments intertwine, finally necessitating the involvement of Interpol, the FBI, and law enforcers from Europe and Russia. In my opinion this is a BEST SELLER a must read!

may-18 Barbara Everett Heintz –will discuss her new book “Pink honeysuckle”., part-autobiographical, part-fictional memoir about life in southern Appalachia and the migration away from it during the mid-twentieth century. Ms. Heintz account complements her brother’s preface in the first part of the book; it gives her perspective of a girl growing up as the fifth of eight children in the same family. She describes her ongoing domestic chores that began daily at 4 am and that expanded, in adolescence, into Nanning and maid work for other families. Most riveting are her terrifying experiences in the care of sexually abusive family members. Among other difficulties of growing up in her family the author notes, understatedly, the physical handicap that she had to overcome in not receiving appropriate medical treatment for her crossed eyes.

Even though the author’s had many hardships to bear, she shares the many moments of intermittent triumph. This is a must read you will come away with a true understanding of how she overcame adversity and found happiness and the love of life.
